My main research interests center on preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS. Our work in the past decade or so has focused on understanding more about sexual behavior and how we might influence sexual behavior to prevent the transmission of HIV, especially among young men who have sex with other men. With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, we have completed a large-scale interview study of behaviorally bisexual men. Researchers don't know a lot about behavioral bisexual men and their role in the HIV epidemic. We hope our data will help us develop more effective interventions to help these men and their sexual partners reduce their risk for HIV/AIDS.
More recently we have focused on developing and implementing interventions that encourage young African American men to avoid sexual behaviors that put them at risk for HIV. We are working closely with community-based organizations in the African American community to implement and evaluate these interventions. This work is part of a multi-site national study, and similar efforts are underway in 12 other cities in the United States.
Another interest of mine is diversity in the workplace, with a special focus on gender issues. My interest in this area focuses on interactions in the workplace that lead to an environment that is friendly or hostile toward women in corporate settings. Our research group has recently developed two scales to measure the climate for women, one scale examines corporate settings, the other focuses on academic environments. Our primary interest is on the subtle, interpersonal aspects of the work environment, as opposed to harassment and discrimination.
